Writing about secrets is a very tricky business. By definition fact-checking is impossible and none of it should be regarded as non-fiction. I have found a very small number of authors present as intelligible a description as can be found. These include: Gershom Scholem, Joscelyn Godwin, Ronald Hutton, and Wouter Hanegraaff. The single most important fact which is not discussed at all by people who talk about an Eyes Wide Shut or Ninth Gate style occult order is that above all else magic is a weapon of the weak.
