Fenzi Dog Sports Academy and Fenzi herself does positive only protection sports IIRC (I think Shade Weitsell is the name of the one who does positive only IPO). They also have courses on positive hunting training, which is another sport that is still aversive heavy. They’re starting into herding now too.

You have to remember that LEO and hunting types are often working with well bred, highly stable dogs, and will get rid of/rehome dogs that don’t cut it. There are some dogs for which aversive methods can and do work, often quickly, which is what people in those sports often want. But if you look into the potential fallouts from aversive methods, especially on pet dogs, who are often from BYBs or rescues and often are far from stable, recommending the methods LEOs etc can get away with is a disaster waiting to happen. It’s also unnecessary when there are alternatives that combine management and patience to achieve the results pet owners need to have a happy pet.

Many guide dog schools also started out using harsh methods, and failed many dogs. There are a number now that have switched to positive methods — some even more positive only than R+ training (as in one doesn’t even do ANY kind of trick/obedience training early on because it’s too stressful) — and they’re pass rates have increased hugely. There’s a book on it called “Love is All You Need” that’s worth checking out.
