You should read Lust in Translation: Infidelity from Tokyo to Tennessee. The writer did snowball research in various countries (US, Russia, Italy, etc) and cultures (Jewish, older generations, etc) and what they think of cheating. Some think that it's beneficial to a relationship, others not so much.

In the beginning, the author is speaking with an American couple trying to work things out. Apparently, some of the feelings that come from being cheated on are similar to PTSD. Not the same, but similar.

Reminds me of a passage from "Lust in Translation". The guy was in a dead bedroom situation and was seeing a shrink because of it. Then he started an affair and realized he doesn't need the shrink anymore. Plus, less fights with the wife.
