I'll be in Victoria for the relay. Looks like an excellent course. I'm really looking forward to it!

For your first open water race, it's going to be super disorienting. The lakes in the Northwest tend to be murky, which on top of the churning water from other swimmers means low visibility. And, despite the recent run of nice weather, the lakes I've been training in are still plenty cold especially away from the shallows, which can create panic when you first get into the water. So I'd recommend you fit in as many open water swims as possible in the next week. I've also found it helpful to do some technique drills using a Phelps training snorkel since it gets me used to seeing under the water and allows me to breathe until I'm able to approach the swim with less panic. If that's not possible due to your location, at least do some sighting drills to get used to swimming with your head out of the water to find your way, and consider getting in at Hamsterly Beach for a short swim (perhaps with snorkel) on Friday or Saturday. On race day, make sure you take a nice easy warmup in the water before the start to let your body acclimate a bit. And know that the open water, compared to an indoor swim leg, means more strokes (no walls to push off) and more distance (no lanes so you'll likely stray from the most direct path between bouys). So give yourself permission to take it slow and switch to backstroke if necessary to catch your breath and reorient. Managing your fear and nerves is part of race day, and you need to save that energy for the other legs.

For gear, I use dark-brown tinted Barracuda goggles which is helpful with glare when the sun is out. On a cloudy day I prefer a light yellow tint.

I wear ear plugs both in training and in races. Having water in my ears is super distracting. The Mack's Aquablock ear plugs have worked perfectly for me, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000277SL0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RMMbBbBJ1TZTA , but there are other designs out there as well. They're cheap, so no harm in ordering them and trying them out in the pool this week before deciding whether to use them in Victoria. I'm also a fan of nose clips, I use the Speedo competition clip, but if that hasn't been bothering you there's no reason to add another new element to your equipment so soon before the big day.

Good luck, and see you out there!

These keep water out and don't cost $60. While there is some hearing loss, it really isn't that much and taking them out while on shore is quick and easy. I also wouldn't have to worry about losing a pair when you can get 6 pairs for $10
