"You don’t have to dig very far in prophetic literature to see that Judaism has all kinds of apocalyptic statements about what’s going to come. Amos says the days of the L-rd aren’t going to be a happy time: bitter, awful, famine, no light will shine. Jeremiah, who is practically synonymous with apocalyptic visions, says the earth is going to be waste and void, the heavens will shed no light, cities will lie in ruins. But Maimonides doesn’t refer to any of this!

"Jewish Messianism is in its origin and by its nature a theory of catastrophe. The vision of the Prophets is that the evil that human beings have done is so great and manifest that the only way out is through some Divinely ordained cataclysmic event. The Prophets deny that mankind can extract itself with step-by-step progress. Grabbing our bootstraps won’t work. It will take something really awful. The world after the cataclysm will be completely unlike this one.

"Messianism poses philosophic problems …"
