I personally prefer metal. Silicone is very flexible and sometimes getting it connected when its bending all over the place is difficult. If you do go with silicone make sure it is linked both top and bottom.
Silicone is decidedly better for incognito. The metal ones are still pretty hard to notice, but you will be more self aware of the unforgiving bulge in your pants.
I avoid the plastic ones like the CB series, I've had them just split apart at the seem on me.
As for activities. I have run on a treadmill in one, it was possible, but you wont forget you have it on.
