I can sympothise with the cat issue, I have 9 cats right now. They come with a replacement cable and a soft-case. I don't know about the second generation, but the first generation felt fairly neutral but the bass was slightly lacking in my opinion. I retired them a few months ago after losing all the rubber tips :/.
I do buds and full-face. Helmet is a nice Shoei on the 'quieter' side of lids, but it's still more than loud enough to damage hearing from wind noise.
The trick is to get buds that seal well, it should be kinda difficult to hear someone next to you talking when you're wearing them. Then music at lowish volume, just enough. I use and recommend these ones with the included foam tips. I had these cheaper ones for a while but the foam tips fell apart in 6 months and it only came with one pair. The Shure foamies are over a year now and look like new, plus it came with 3 pairs in different sizes.
Anecdotally I haven't noticed any discomfort or change in hearing ability using this method since I started a couple years ago. Having ridden without buds a couple times at the beginning I do know the ringing "grenade just went off" feeling that created after an hour or two at high speed, and I don't get that at all with the buds.
I had some MEE Audio M6 ear buds a few years ago and found the quality good for my expectations. Looks like there is a new version now which includes foam tips. The wire bit of these goes over the top of you ear so I found them good for exercising.
