Is probably about the best we can fit in for your price range and requirements. If you want to give up the surrounds and go with better front speakers, that's an option, but even finding L/C/R speakers for around 200 you're not going to get truly quality stuff. Craigslist can be your friend for this too.

My option doesn't have wireless rears, you'll have to find a way to run the wires (under an area rug, tucked below the floor molding, etc.) or pay about $90 for the Monoprice wireless speaker transmitters. It also is missing airplay, for that I'd suggest a chromecast audio.

This is for a 12'x15' enclosed art installation that will be playing mostly bass-heavy ambient music. Speakers will be hung in the upper corners of the room pointed down, with a subwoofer in the middle. Music will probably come from an ipod.

So you're looking for a full 5.1 for $500...it can be done. Destruct0 is right either you invest into a good 2.1 or you get a lower end 5.1 it's up to you to choose. I'll play the 5.1 angle since Destruct0 has already given you the 2.0 route.

AVR - E400 $250 with free shipping is worth it as it's only going to be a $30 more than the E300. It brings 7.1, 2 zone, and Audyssey Silver to the table.

Speakers - Pick one of these sets.

• Yamaha NS-SP1800BL $130 - Basic 5.1 set that will get the job done. Gives you a foundation to build from in the future.
  
  
• Dayton Audio HTP-2 $195 - Gives you a better foundation as the sub is going to be bigger and generally considered one of the better budget subs out.
  
  
• Monoprice Premium $222 - Energy Take Classic copy.
  
  I would recommend some stands to get the speakers to the correct height. Also don't forget wire, HDMI cables, and a sub cable if you get the Dayton. It likes to have both r/l inputs used.
  
  Obviously if you want two sets of stands the Yamaha is the clear choice...if you can budget more look at the others but please don't put all the front speakers on that fireplace.

To be direct - the speakers are junk, but in all seriousness if you like them that is all that matters.

Most people have never heard good surround sound, so most things will sound better than an internal TV speaker.

A good setup will cost you about $750 - $1000. Which is less than a good TV. Audio is just as important as picture to most of us.

I'm trying to understand your issue here - what exactly are you trying to do to make it sound better? It's only going to sound as good as what's playing it - so, if you're using the speakers on your TV, it's probably not great. You can do something like this:

I haven't had any experience with these speakers at all, but based on your price range and other users reccomendations I will forward this: this.

The Monoprice 5.1 system for $270 is very similar to the highly reviewed Energy Take 5.1 system that sells for $400. In fact the last version so clearly was a clone that Energy sued monoprice.

For an amp you kinda have to look around for one that has the features you want for your price. The Wirecutter might be a good place to start.
