There used to be a child gate there. The hinge would be on the other wall across from it. The gate has a round thing that latches into that

We have it raised up a bit so the cats can slip under. Our toddler is in the 80th-90th percentile for everything and he doesn't make it budge, nor do I when I crash into it. Make sure you put the hinges on the side with the wall and not a banister so that you have some solid studs for it to mount on.
