Native Instruments is pretty good as far as product service goes, so you'll probably hear back right away. Unfortunately, I'm not sure about the answers to your questions.

I still strongly suggest to find someone getting rid of a used copy. The whole package is definitely pricey, especially if you only need a few pieces from it.

I still have Kontakt 3, from when it was sold as a standalone piece. It has a full library of orchestral sounds that you can develop via MIDI. I'm not sure if the free player has limitations, but my assumption is "probably."

The sounds are very realistic for their price range. The real benefit here is the player though. You can play pretty much anything. So, you can sample another orchestra's recording, slice it, mix it, then use it however you want in Kontakt.

I saw on amazon that someone is selling Kontakt version 3 (which will definitely do what you want) for $149. Check it out.
