The cables were installed less than a year ago by myself. I used this cable.

I am using this network switch, also purchased less than a year ago.

I doubt it's an issue of hardware...I'm most probably doing something wrong

Routers can get clogged down with Wifi traffic and DHCP handling and other tasks. Simply, if you haven't really investigated routers, or made your own, you probably don't have a "good" one. Likewise, if you haven't bought a wifi access point and disabled the routers wifi then you again run the risk of having a consumer router that will choke fast.

You could be OK. I'd get a dirt cheap networking switch like this (but see if you can find cheaper, I'm not German) and run an ethernet cable to it from the router, then plug all 5 machines in alongside it. Cutting the wifi entirely, making sure people stop as much wasted data use as possible, you should be OK. But 1Mb/s upload ain't great.
