I have combination skin.

I wash my face with Cetaphil Cleanser in the morning and then I put Shiseido Matifying Moisturizer, after that I put Biore Sunscreen (I'm still new to this product, I've been trying out alot of sunscreen products because my skin has been overly sensitive and for some reason I might be allergic to sunscreen lotion T_T), before this I just use Skin79 BB Cream and an umbrella whenever I go out, after the bb cream I put on shiseido foundation and then mascara and lip gloss.

For night: I use Neutrogena make up remover wipes, and then Pond's Cleanser, Thayer's Witch Hazel Toner and then Neutrogena Moisturizer And then Shiseido Eye Cream.

I also use Pierre Cardin Peeling Gel maybe 3 times a week after cleansing my face and then I put on Neutrogena Moisturizer, Shiseido Eyecream and then finish it with a Collagen Essense Mask.

Ready for a book? Here you go!

I’ve suffered from seb derm AND acne prone skin since puberty, and I’m 28 now. If I was still using my original Reddit account, you’d see a post or two in my history from years back when I reached out to r/SkincareAddiction for advice. Lots of good info there, but unfortunately, none of it was very effective for me.

Quick overview of my symptoms/problem areas before I tell you what’s been working for me for the past five years:

  • When untreated, 50%-60% (and at its worst, up to 80%) of my facial skin is red, rough, and flaky—basically in a “flared up” state, but permanently. My scalp is another beast entirely; most of is covered in bump-like clusters of flakes, which become easily visible and look like a snowfall of yellow-tinted dandruff.

  • Particularly affected areas include sides of nose/nostrils, center of forehead, eyebrows, sides of mouth, hairline, and ears (outer and within the start of the canal)

  • Makeup application is next to impossible in this state, and it is physically uncomfortable.

Believe me when I say I’ve tried just about -everything- that someone with a decent income living in the US can get their hands on. I’ve even gone so far as to buy and try a product discontinued in the US due to FDA regulations via Ebay, shipped from Russia. No luck there, either.

Now, my case is rather severe. I don’t get “flare ups”. For whatever unlucky reason, this is just how my skin is. I’ve yet to discover any underlying chemical cause, but I’m still working on it.

For now, and for about the last five years, this is what has worked for me:

  1. My #1 product is something that most people who are serious about skincare will warn against the regular use of, but in my case, it’s a necessity: a topical prescription steroid lotion. I use hydrocortisone 2.5%. Without it, the rest of my skincare might as well not matter at all. When I apply after every shower (every 2-3 days), my skin is virtually flake-free, and will stay that way for some time. I can wear light foundation and powder and it looks good. I’m serious when I say that without this, I’d be miserable, and I’m sad I went so many years without it.

  2. Mild cleanser. Don’t get something harsh, and try to avoid most “natural” products, be they homemade or retail. A lot of natural cosmetics contain ingredients that can “feed” and essentially encourage the fungal aspect of seb derm.

  3. Physical exfoliant. Be careful with this. It’s tempting to regularly scrub the hell out of your face to get rid of all the flakes, but you don’t want to cause excessive micro-tearing; it’s bound to happen, but you can limit the severity by being extra-gentle. I use a salt scrub from Lush (the only “natural” product I use), but immediately follow up with my mild cleanser to limit my skin’s exposure to the stuff the seb derm likes to chow down on.

I have used a Clarisonic in the past with my mild cleanser, but I got tired of having to constantly disinfect it.

  4. An oil-free, fragrance-free moisturizer. After I apply my steroid lotion and let it soak in for a minute or two, I apply about a nickel-sized amount of moisturizer. This keeps my skin feeling hydrated and helps to replenish some moisture-loss from the steroid cream.

To break it down in order of steps:

  5. Exfoliate in shower with salt scrub.
  6. Cleanse with mild cleanser
  7. Immediately after patting face dry, apply a little less than a dime-sized amount of steroid lotion.
  8. After steroid soaks in a little, moisturize.

Now, for my acne issues — I get a ton of blackheads. I think it has to do with the overproduction of oil thanks to the seb derm. All I really do for it is, about once a week, gently extract after a shower when my pores are relaxed from the cleansing and steam, using a metal blackhead extractor. If you choose to do this, be very patient and careful. I caused some pitted scarring in my cheeks when I used to just go to town. Skin with seb derm is extra fragile, and the steroid lotion causes some thinning over time.

Secondly, before my other products, I swipe a salicylic acid pad over my problem areas. This has really made a difference.

Whew! That was long. I’m just really serious about sharing my experience with people who have to deal with this incredibly annoying and often-times depressing condition. I hope this helped. Feel free to ask questions! I’m an open book when it comes to my skin.

TL;DR: This is the moisturizer I’m currently using:

AM:

La Roche-Posay Hydrating Cleanser, sometimes on a konjac sponge if I need exfoliation

La Roche-Posay Double Repair Moisturizer

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Shaka Fluid SPF if I'm going out

PM:

Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Water -- I use this as my standalone cleanser if I'm not wearing sunscreen. If I am, I follow it up with the LRP morning cleanser.

Tretinoin gel 0.1%

LRP Double Repair Moisturizer

LRP Cicaplast Baume B5 over my whole face as a final occlusive layer just like you use. One of the best skin purchases I've ever made and I'll never use vaseline again lol.

---------------

I feel like I've tried everything... Cetaphil and Cerave gave me the worst breakouts of my life, Vanicream dried out my skin, Sebamed didn't do anything, Eucerin made my face hot, FAB has the worst smelling products EVER (seriously why is nobody talking about that smell) etc. I've wasted so much money over the years. The biggest waste of time/money was trying to do a k-beauty multistep routine, I never saw any results from those products.

LRP is my HG but I know how expensive it is. My close second HG are the basic Neutrogena products, specifically this cleanser and this moisturizer, plus I like their sunscreens. If I'm ever having to budget more, I'll go back into Neutrogena's arms for sure lol. Garnier micellar water too, which I see you use.

I hope that helps, it sounds like we have similar skin reactions to several brands and less is more for us. I know how it is to be extremely frustrated, I've spent years researching and experimenting and blahblahblah almost nothing has worked for me but azelaic acid, tret, and now the cicaplast. I'm thinking of incorporating azelaic acid again a few times a week because it really does smooth out the skin, but otherwise that's it, I'm done lol.

I have quite oily skin and often get red inflamed spots and some puss filled pimples on my forehead and cheeks. My skin is also mildly sensitive to very harsh products.

I have been using these products as my skincare routine for about 6-7 months:

Thanks so much for the write up.

>Dupes are Clinique moisturizing gel and Nuetrogena oil-free lotion sensitive skin. Apply a little and rub in circular motions to damp skin so cells can soften and desquamate/shed.

I moisturize first thing after washing my face and I do wash my face in the shower quite often. Thanks for the recommendations/tips.

>If you have oily skin, other options are Cerave in a huge lotion bottle, NOT the pm one.

Do you know what the difference is between Cerave and Cetaphil? I'm having a hard time finding cerave AM without spf. Can I use a cream or face and body lotion without it feeling too heavy?

I don't think I'm stripping my skin, I don't use much on my face in regards to toners or exfoliating. I don't wear make up, only eye shadow primer and gel liner. The eye primer is so important bc without it, my eyeliner starts to smudge from oiliness (it is also from having monolids). I've been planning on getting back into make up this year but that's another thing I'm a noob at right now.

I go back and forth between 2 face cleansers, [Neutrogena Neutrogena Oil-Free] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002ECVMWM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_wtoRDbEQVGMPT) and garnier Mercier water Foaming Face Wash - it says foaming on the bottle but it does not foam at all. I wash my face with either of these in morning and before bed. I even bought a silk pillowcase last year to protect my hair and skin bc cotton was drying my face out and messing with my baby hairs.

My main moisturizer is the Neutrogena hydro boost. Before this I used the plain oil free Neutrogena. I stopped using moisturizer with spf (Aveeno) bc it felt too heavy for me and made me oiler. My boyfriend uses aveeno with spf 15 and he's never oily. once in awhile I'll use Derma E Tea Tree and Vitamin E Relief Cream.

I've started using a small amount of Paula's Choice bha for blackheads on my nose, in between my brows, and inner cheek area (next to my nose) once or twice a week for blackheads.

I get a few sporadic pimples here and there. I get small bumps on my jawline that get really itchy but it never gets red. It happens so often I think it might be hormonal.

The main problem that I need help with is how oily my nose is. Like an hour after I wash my face, my nose will have small bumps of oil. I feel like it's never clean. By night time if I don't touch my face, you can see oil on my forehead, nose, and in between my brows. My forehead somehow looks dry and oily though.
