Just FYI, this is not the start of Bendis's New Avengers run. He started writing New Avengers in 2005, which ran for 64 issues, starting with this trade:

http://www.amazon.com/New-Avengers-Vol-1-Breakout/dp/0785114793/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1377919434&sr=1-2&keywords=new+avengers%2C+vol.+1

After those 64 issues, the numbering started back over at #1 in 2010 (although chronologically, the series continues from where the previous 64 issues left off). The scene you linked to is from issue #2 in his second run on the title (and is therefore Bendis's 66th issue overall), which started with this trade (and ran for 34 issues):

http://www.amazon.com/Avengers-Vol-Brian-Michael-Bendis/dp/0785148736/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1377919434&sr=1-3&keywords=new+avengers%2C+vol.+1

So, to sum up, Bendis's New Avengers can be broken down like so:

New Avengers (2005-2010) #1-64,
New Avengers (2010-2012) #1-34

All very confusing, I realize. I just wanted to let you know, that if you want to read New Avengers from the start, you have skipped over a lot.

> Where can I read it?

There are a lot of options:

  • If you're interested in digital comics, the most cost-effective legal option would probably be Marvel Unlimited. It's basically Marvel Comics' Netflix, you can read their whole backlog (anything older than six months) for $10 a month or $70 a year.

  • If you're interested in reading physical comics, your local library may have the TBPs (trade paperbacks; collected editions containing six or so issues). You could also buy the TBPs, but that gets pricey quick.

  • There's also the option of the high seas, but I don't know if we're allowed to discuss that on this sub. You're welcome to pm me if you have questions about it, and there's also lots of info over on r/piracy.

    > what is the accurate issue number or things like that? I’m new to comic

Comics are sorted into volumes; each new volume is normally a relaunch, so they start with a new issue #1. For New Avengers, start at Vol. 1, #1.

A good place to start with Spider-Man is the collection Spider-Man: Big Time, which is the beginning of Dan Slott's work on Spider-Man started in 2010 and he's still writing the series. It's a good jumping on point that'll give you a lot of good reading material to read through up to the present. You can find a list of Spider-Man paperback collections here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Spider-Man_titles#Trade_paperbacks

For Spider-Man, Jessica Drew, and the Avengers, I would probably recommend starting with Brian Bendis' work on New Avengers, starting with New Avengers vol. 1: Breakout. Spider-Man and Jessica Drew both join the Avengers in that story, and are featured in the series as it continues (especially Jessica). You can find a list of New Avengers paperbacks here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Avengers_(comics)#Collected_editions

For Deadpool, his complicated backstory is not really a factor in most of his stories. You can jump right in to Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn's current run with Deadpool vol. 1: Dead Presidents very easily.

Now, I would recommend checking your local library first, they may have a lot of these available to check out. I'd also want to let you know that Marvel has a digital subscription service called Marvel Unlimited which has every comic I just mentioned available to read for $10/month or $70/year. It's a real good deal.

For Avengers I'd recommend Avengers Disassembled and New Avengers and you can just keep going with New Avengers if you want.

For Black Panther - Christopher Priest's work.

For Captain America/Winter Soldier - Ed Brubaker's work.

For Daredevil I'd recommend starting with Bendis' work.

For the Hulk - Planet Hulk.

Jessica Jones - Alias

Thor - start here and read everything that comes out afterwards with the name Aaron on it

New Avengers is probably the best Avengers book out there, but it has a very different cast of characters from the traditional Avengers. There's no Thor, very little Cap, even less Iron Man... ect. Instead you have Luke Cage, Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Spidey, Mockingbird, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Spider-Woman...

It's a fantastic series and begins here.

I was in this position a few years back. It's an intimidating world for sure. Whilst I'm no expert, these books/story arcs got me off to a good start:

  • Secret War - a good kick off and kind of leads into New Avengers if I remember correctly.

  • New Avengers - this book is just good times. Brian Michael Bendis cops a lot of shit but I've always liked his writing.

  • I also liked reading through the crossover events like Civil War and Secret Invasion, I always feel like you get good bang for your buck with those. There are the main story lines but all the individual titles tie in so you can just read more about your favourite characters.

  • If you like Joss Whedon (silly question?) and you like X-Men check out Astonishing X-Men

There's a lot of information available on Wikipedia if you just want to get caught up on specific things. Here's a list of all major and crossover events. Have a look and dive into what sounds most interesting to you!

    Most of all, have fun!
