How long is the trip? I live in a hot dry area so I bought a thermo electric wine refrigerator that doesn't create moisture for $180. A regular refrigerator has its own moisture that I don't think is what you want cigars at but I'm not %100 on that. Out of your two options I'd go with the dark closet. If you're going away for weeks or months I'd spring for a small thermo electric fridge.
