Are those the Nyko HD-Link cables? There are some reports of audio buzzing and their Wiis being shorted/burnt out by them. That may the culprit.
If it's a third party cable, it could be just poor quality. It's possible that it could be shorting a pin or two in the socket, which could result in a power failure; famously, MetalJesusRocks on YouTube permanently bricked his GameCube thanks to a subpar connector on an HDMI adapter he was testing, so that proves it can happen. Thankfully in your situation it doesn't seem to cause a permanent issue. I'd try to get a return processed on the cable you bought, and try to get first-party cables from eBay, seems they're trending around $25-$30 right now which isn't bad. I've also personally had luck using Nyko component cables for years with my Wii, and those seem to be slightly cheaper.
