First off I'm no expert so please don't take my way of doing it as the best way but it'll get the job done.

Changing the bezel insert is easy as it's glued down. I used a tool(tweezers) to pry it up and put a couple small dabs of cement glue down to secure the new one.

Mods:

1. Use back removal tool to unscrew back.
   
2. Remove crown by pushing button and pulling crown. You will have to watch a video of somebody doing this. It's easy but you just have to know where to press and use a toothpick something similar. At this point to you can replace the crown and stem. The stem is the long pointy part coming out the crown. FYI if you buy a another different movement(NH36), you're probably going to need to get a proper crown and stem that fit the new movement.
   
3. Remove the movement from the case by tapping the case against your hand and it should come out. Watch video for illustration. With the movement out you can change the hands, dial, and swap movement.
   
4. Remove crystal with press tool. Watch video for illustration. With the crystal out you can change the chapter ring.
   
   Also if you change movements to a NH36 you can also change the day. Use the one from the old movement if you want the day to line up properly.
   
   Others tools are me just using what I have around the house.
   
   For videos search for "skx007 sapphire crystal replacement" on YouTube. The top three videos are good. Plus the people who made them have other instructional videos.
   
   The good thing about these is that even if you break the movement, for $40 you can get an upgrade that has hacking and manual winding.
   
   My advice is to try if you are ok with breaking it.
   
   Patience is key. There are a lot more specialized tools that you can get for removing the hands and other task to do it properly.

It wasn't too difficult. The biggest hurdle was overcoming my anxiety around destroying the whole watch. But I watched a few Youtube videos before doing it, to get an idea of how to go about it. I'm happy to answer questions about the process if anyone wants to message me.

Based in my interactions with local watch/jewelry shops, my guess is that a crystal replacement would have been $50 to $100. The $15 watch press (and the experience gained from using it) seemed like a better deal.

Edit: forgot to mention: the bezel was easy to pop off with a case knife, but you could really use any firm knife to do it. Again, Youtube has great video examples.

you should start out with a basic kit (can't find the one I started on, this is basically it), hand puller/presser, and a crystal press and you should have the tools do do most anything people like to do as far as mods come... domed crystal swaps, new hands and dials, etc... plus you'll have all the tools necessary to change batteries, resize a bracelet, etc...

But the caveat is that they're inexpensive beginner tools, and if you find this to be a hobby you enjoy, you'll start replacing items one by one from Esslinger -- the tweezers aren't good enough, replace them with a nice set of 7, the screw drivers are too blunt/dull shape them for now but replace them with a nicer set, etc... while you'll eventually replace everything, there's no sense in going all in for several hundred dollars just to try it out.

It is a snap back, it's a little tricky depending on how tight it is. To do this properly you need a [case knife] ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0001CULSS/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469935099&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=watch+case+knife&dpPl=1&dpID=31vV2ratvDL&ref=plSrch) or a sharp screw driver. You will find a small lip/cut-out under the case back, there is only one, so have a close look. Use the knife or screwdriver, it will fit into the Cut out, give it a little twist and it will pop off. Swap out the battery. Now getting the case back on can be a bit tricky. It can take a fair amount of force and you have to keep the caseback parallel to the case. Or take it to any jewellery shop that sells Watches and they will do it, but the price can vary a lot ($10 to $20), but where is the fun in that?

If you're not going to be doing a lot of similar work then a cheap crystal press would work.

Just be thoughtful on which nylon dies you use to push it in/out. Push it out from the back and in from the front.
