So I finished reading this book about Farm Hall last week. The main take-away I got out of it was that most of them (with the possible exception of von Laue) were pretty vain with an overly developed sense of self-importance. They really didn't seem to quite realize that Germany actually lost the war (they had in-depth discussions about how to ensure that scientific research in Europe would be sufficiently 'German' in terms of leadership and style).

It's a good read, though, and pretty hilarious how far off they were from creating a nuke. And then their immediately turning around and saying "well, WE were never trying to develop a bomb! We were just trying to use it as a power reactor," never specifically stating that the reason they switched to power generation problems was because they were too inept or careless to figure out how to develop an atomic weapon.

He can claim all he wants, but we have transcripts of secret recordings of Nazi nuclear scientists at Farm Hall where they discuss how little progress they made during the war.

In their conversations, they discuss how they had managed to bury a few grams of low grade nuclear material for research purposes after the war. The material in question was of such limited use, that the American army felt it wasn't worth digging up.

See Charles Frank's excellent "Operation Epsilon, the Farm Hall Transcripts" for further information.
