For notification on when someone enters an area I really like this simple sensor system from Optex. If you want to save money, Chamberlain makes a similar sensor that is a third of the cost. These use PIR (Passive Infra Red) so they will not be set off by plants moving, but will be set off by pets so try to aim them so they don't trigger for anything shorter than 12 inches high.
