It's not an SLR, actually (which is why it's a little grainy)! It's a Panasonic Lumix FZ40.

What model Sony does she currently have? Do you know if it has a burst mode. Enabling burst mode can ge useful (well it is for me when hand holding) as each time you press the shutter you end up taking 3 or more photos, often 1 is considerably sharper than the others.
Does she take photos in difficult conditions, into the light, low light without flash, as that sort of shot would probably need a better camera to get right in automatic settings.
My parents use a slightly older model of this Panasonic Lumix super-zoom which is rather complex but they manage (somehow). It does give a massive zoom range, a decent quality lens, but is largish and looks quite daunting.
Can you get Mom to a camera shop to try out a few in hand to see what she takes a fancy to.
