My take on tripods: I generally don't take them hiking. Light ones are too flimsy and sturdy ones are too heavy. I will, though, bring a small tabletop tripod that I've used to great effect to setup on rocks or the ground for moving water shots, stars, sunsets, or other long exposure situations where you have some flexibility. I use this little 3pod that was on sale for $20 or so. Or spend more for the Manfrotto name.

I do a lot of hiking with my camera, too. An experience many of us have is that if your camera isn't in your hands or very close, you're unlikely to pull it out. I like to hike with my SL1 and the EF-S 24mm pancake. It's a fantastic combo. I keep it on my hip or chest with a Peak Designs CapturePro. (Or consider getting the completely patent-infringing chinese ripoff and then buy a real Peak Designs after you decide how much you like it that it's worth supporting the real innovators.

Another great tool for landscapes and outdoor photography is a graduated ND filter like this 52mm Tiffen HT, or themore affordable one with less fancy coatings. It helps balance exposure when you have part of your image very bright (like a sky) and the other half fairly dark (like your foreground). I rarely shoot a landscape without one.

You could get the tabletop tripod, 24mm pancake, ND grad, and clip holster for under your budget. It'll up your image quality and have you with a very nice trail ready setup.

I can't think of another lens to recommend in your budget that would improve your image quality, be convenient enough to take everywhere, and allow you to work on the fundamentals of photography as much as the 24mm. Maybe it's just the lens I've come to really, really like and consider it an essential piece in my kit that gets used a more than some much pricier lenses.

I understand that you'll probably opt for something with a big zoom range, just like I did long ago. And I know many others who do as well. And maybe that's a necessary step before coming around to appreciate primes. Maybe it's part of discovering who you are as a photographer. The only wrong choice would be to think your gear was handicapping you and then not go out and shoot.

Peak Designs Capture Clip Pro is my method of choice. The camera attaches directly to your backpacking strap via the tri-pod mount on the bottom so it isn't swinging around or anything and the weight is transferred to the pack instead of around your neck. I was worried about dropping it at first so I started to loop the camera strap in the chest strap on my pack so if I were to ever drop the camera it would catch.

Backpack clip by peak design. Bought it for a multi purpose use. Polarpro makes one for exclusively he GoPro.

Look at Domke camera wraps. I personally like using a backpack instead of a camera bag for travel. I find it's way easier to just fold the wrap up, rather than deal with an empty bag.

Haphazardly, haha. I kind of just dump my camera and extra batteries in my backpack and attach my tripod securely with the straps.

If I was doing longer trips I'd probably figure out a better solution, but for now I've just been riding around relatively close to where I live.

I also have this as an option, which lets you attach your camera to a backpack strap or something like it.
