I have a logitech red ball from the older corded version of that. Found it on CL and just took the ball out.

It gets better over time, but not significantly. This replacement ball fits perfectly and is a lot smoother.

I've used both glossy and matte red and they both feel great. I swap between them pretty often, depending on what I'm doing, but I definitely prefer the glossy finish. I would say the finish on the stock MX Ergo ball is somewhere in between the two.
