I also have a bolter! We got our hound mix (Stella) from a shelter 5 years ago, and the day after we got her she slipped out of her collar and spent 24 hours roaming free. We went to a trainer immediately to work on it, and we were recommended a Gentle Leader. Not sure if Lena slips out of her collar, but it's the only thing Stella can't get out of (her neck must be double jointed, I know that's not a thing, but I swear she's a little Houdini). Over time, the Gentle Leader has given her confidence when she is outside, and she's gotten so attached to us that if she does manage to bolt, she runs a few large circles and then runs back asking for food. But we're still paranoid and have strict family rules to prevent another episode:

  • If we go in the car, the doors don't open until the Gentle Leader is on and someone has confirmed "I have Stella's leash in my hand."
  • If we have to open the front door for something, she gets locked in a room.
  • We taught her to wait for us to go out the door first (stand by the door, start to open it, and as she lunges forward close it, repeat until she catches on). This lets us leave the house without her trying to squeeze through our legs.
  • Stella is microchipped and also wears a regular collar that never gets attached to a leash. We always use the Gentle Leader on her, so if she does somehow get out of it (literally impossible) she still has a collar with her tags.
  • We also have a second dog (Loki the border collie) and taught him to "go get Stella". He's a herding dog (no herding training, just instinct) so when we tell him to go get her, he runs around her and cuts her off. He usually tries to get her to play, but just him running around and cutting her off is enough to slow her down and make her think "why am I running from the people that give me delicious food???"
