Although you could also get a break-away collar which snaps open when put under pressure.
This is the breakaway collar that we use for our dog. The breakaway part is partially covered by the tag in the photo on there, but it is separate from the regular quick release buckle. There's a D-ring on either side of the breakaway part, so if you want to walk your dog on a leash, you put the clip through both D-rings. I've found the collar popped open more than once because the tags got stuck on something, so I'm very glad we have it.
