During a beach vacation, where my bedroom faced the sunrise, I was amazed that my body would just be "done" with sleep, when the morning rays came into my room. I decided to try one of those sunrise alarm clocks, because in theory they sounded perfect. I absolutely hated it! I had the strangest primitive level of resentment for the goddamn thing. Apparently, we just can't replicate the real thing, just yet. I guess the answer for me is to move to the shore, and quit working... Then I can be a "morning person"!

Not really what you're asking, but I do use a light alarm clock to help wake up. I find it hella useful to get my ass out of bed when it's pitch black. I use the Philips Wake-Up Light and my room gets so ridiculously bright.
The Philips 3510 (and 3520) do that.
"Relax and drift off to sleep with dimming sunset with 20 brightness settings. "
You basically want the ones with the sunset / dusk simulation

No one has mentioned this yet. I picked up this sunrise/sunset alarm clock, and it's amazing.
I'm sorry this is so hard for you. SAD really stinks.
The exercise, clean eating, light therapy, and anti-depressants are a big deal in managing SAD. It is awesome that you are doing this already.
It can be frustrating to be doing so much yet feel like it isn't quite enough. A lot of people need to do several things at the same time to manage SAD. Are you taking vitamin D? If wake ups are a problem, you might consider a wake up light alarm clock. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is really good for SAD, too.
I have a really bad time with long, unrestful sleep. The wake up light alarm is a big deal. I keep a light box next to my monitor and have it on most of the mornings when I work. For me, 20-30 min is not enough.
Do you have people in your life who will help you stay engaged in activities? Is there anyone you can ask for help with this?
For me, mid-end of December is usually the worst of the winter. You are not alone. Sometimes it helps to know that you have company. It doesn't lessen the feelings, but it can be less lonely.
Stay strong, days start getting longer in just 16 days!
If he's working too hard (which it sounds like) maybe gifts that could help energize/relax would be a good idea.
Here's my ideas.

For his body: A massage/ epsom salt muscle soaks/Gel insoles /yoga session
Maybe some couples coupons? Is there a favorite meal of your's that he loves? Cook him that.

Check out one of these wake up light; set so it starts gradually before your alarm the same time every day. I usually wake up refreshed before the alarm now.

I've never had trouble waking up to an alarm. But i couldn't shake that morning fog. These lights are expensive, but it's the one thing that has helped me the most, with zero negative side effects.
After a lot of searching and trying to decide which features matter to me(Radio yes, phone doc no) I chose this one. For some reason that model on US amazon is more expensive than the next one(the 3520) but it was cheaper on spanish amazon(where I bought it from). I'm going to try it for the first time tomorrow.
I have this. Wakes me up nice and gently with the brilliance of the sun about 2 feet from my face.
Thanks! Is this one the one you are talking about?
A have only used one that I got for Christmas some years back. There seem to be some cheaper ones out there, but I have not checked them out.
Ya, they are a bit expensive unfortunately, but the clock I got was probably the biggest factor in helping me reset my sleep after years of depression induced "insomnia".
Don't know if this is something that might interest you, but there is this super awesome alarm clock I want to tell you about!
I have been using this amazing wake up light, 20 minutes until your alarm is set to go off, it begins lighting up from a deep red to an orange to a white or even to a bright yellow if that's what you want! It is been super awesome for my wife and I, especially in the winter time when it does not get light until like 7:00 or 8:00
