I have lights on mains socket timers at the back and front of the house. They switch on before dark then switch off at bedtime, so even if I'm late home the house still looks occupied.

Obviously you can find other stuff if you like but that's my setup and is working perfectly. No noise, no smell, nothing except two beautiful plants. You'll need a couple of other things like nutrients, thermometer and a hygrometer, but they're dead cheap and down to personal preference. Don't be intimidated by all the initial research and leg work necessary, it's pretty easy once you get going and the benefits massively outweigh the effort.
Just want to add to this. Most of the heaters don't have an automatic shut off and it's so easy to forget that you've put something in it. Using one of the plug timers can prevent a lot of disasters. :)
