Oh! Let me get you all of the materials I use. I will link them all on Amazon.com below the explanations.

Pens: I use Pilot Parallel Pens. I prefer the 3.8 mm nib size. The 2.4 mm will do too. 1.5 mm is too small to do anything but italics. The 6 mm pen is huge and you will need large paper to write anything meaningful.
Paper: Smooth Bristol paper I've found so far to be the best. It's 100 lb weight and smooth. The pen doesn't catch so much on its surface.
Books: Medieval Calligraphy, Its History and Technique and Calligraphy of the Middle Ages and How to Do It by Marc Drogin are what I use for reference.
Miscellaneous items: A T-Square is almost essential for drawing guiding lines. Be careful which one you buy. If the arm is elevated too far off the table it will make it harder to draw lines. The cheap plastic ones have been been in this regard for me but they are fragile. I also have a Manuscript calligraphy ruler with the nib heights on them. Not all scripts are done at the same height. The ruler doesn't have the 6 mm nib on it but it does have the 3.8 mm. A hair dryer is also useful if you want to quicken the drying process so you can erases the guiding lines.

Those two books will help you get started. I think it mentions in one of them that calligraphers practise their technique by writing, "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog," because it has all of the letters of the alphabet. That's why font previews have the font written out in that sentence.

Pilot Parallel Pen 2-Color Calligraphy Pen Set, with Black and Red Ink Cartridges in 2.4mm Nib size and 3.8mm Nib size with extra 12 assorted colors cartridges and 12 black cartridges. I assume the cartridges are not dependent on nib size as that would be infuriatingly stupid. Only dependent on the brands pen circumference? Correct me if I am wrong on that.

Hopefully that's pretty comprehensive but as far as speedball goes these are the texts I've found:

Last week, I bought a Pilot Parallel 1.5mm (10$), refills of black ink (4$), and some non-related book to get the total to over 25$ for free shipping on amazon.ca. (I live in Quebec).

The Pilot Parallel is suggested for beginners in the wiki. I've been using it for two evenings, and I love it so far :).
