I actually talked with my dentist about how frustrating it must be to deal with the abysmal flossing compliance of his patients. I think it made him happy that someone actually cared. I'm in the minority of people that actually ENJOY going to the dentist, and not 'cause I've always had perfect dental hygiene—I experienced the same painful shit from not flossing, but I always knew it was because I was a dumbass, and that the dentist/hygienist were just doing damage control. I asked him questions about specific stuff I can do to improve my dental hygiene (e.g., brushing techniques, waterpik vs. traditional flossing), and he regaled me with tales of the former Soviet Union.
Seriously. He told me stories about fellow dentists getting disappeared by KGB and the like...crazy stuff.
Something that really helped me with forming good flossing habits was buying a bunch of those disposable flossers. One of the things I hated most about flossing was having to stick my fingers in my mouth: it's awkward, they get all nasty, and your blood circulation gets cut off by the floss. With a flosser, you can get the job done much more neatly and efficiently, and the ones I got even do double duty as toothpicks. I like to think that the whole twin line thing helps, but you can probably do just about as well with whatever the lowest price/count flossers are.
TL:DR: Start flossing regularly, you savages! Flossers make it easier.
