Yep, it really helps. For my g1wc I'm using a Polaroid 37mm CPL with a 34-37mm step up filter. I used some duct tape to get it to stay on since I didn't have glue. There's some YouTube Vids on it if anyone wants visuals but its pretty straight forward. Once on, turn the cpl until you see reflections decrease then just leave it alone.

I would just get a couple of cheapo polarized filters and swap them out as they break. That being said I have the same 12 dollar filter that I bought 6 years ago in my camera and have never had any issues with it. That being said I've never had anyone shoot bb's at my camera before.
This one is 8 dollars... You could buy 2-3 of them and use them as consumable lens protectors (if they would even break) in my experience cameras are fairly durable
