When it came out I bought this book: Racing in the Rain by John Horsman and it most definitely wasn't worth $175 new(price in the sleeve says $50USD), but I can see it's price being that high considering it's a first hand account of a man that worked in many a great teams, and that was instrumental in the golden era of the Gulf liveried cars, and he was also key in making the Porsche 917 a fast, workable car, not some wild horse with locked potential.

If you want something that does has a lot of technical info, but it's a bit dated, you can try to get a copy of Piero Taruffi's The technique of motor racing, the basics are well explained and still relevant. Ross Bentley's books are also good.

And I enjoyed reading Jo Ramirez's Memoirs of a Racing Man. You're getting the first hand account of a man that was at Tyrell during it's golden years and also he was one of the handful of men at McLaren that could talk to both Prost and Senna during the height of their conflict.

It can get expensive, I'd recommend looking for a used copy.
