Another good one that's really versatile are those military boot bands that were standard issue for us in the Marine Corps. They're great for holding small items together, or fastening things to mesh netting. What makes them so versatile is that they are really tough elastic, with hooks on each end so they can either fasten to themselves or to ther bands to form a closed loop. Those same hooks are awesome on mesh netting (like some interior pockets/baskets in backpacks). Dirt cheap. I bought $20 worth of them (at $1 per pair) at my local GI supply/surplus shop.
Another option, if you want something more robust, are the Raine boot blousers which come in a standard 1" and a wider/heavier 2" size. These are hook and loop ended which, like the bands, can be closed into itself or attached to others for wider loops.
I ride about 10 minutes to work on a 29" mountain bike without suspension. For Denton streets that's a good bike. wiggee's comments are pretty spot-on. In winter I also wear a balaclava/face mask/scarf and a helmet liner depending on how cold it is. I also have two pairs of winter gloves, one for cool and one for really cold. I've riddin in the mornings below 20F and no problems. Even in the summer it doesn't get too hot until after 9-10am. Get a good helmet with MIPS and wear it. Also for pant leg cuff clips I use blousers.
