Use a hex drive set. I have some laying around for my RC vehicle. I only use one or two out of the entire set on my actual RC truck. I hit it with the lighter until it is really hot, then press in. Afterwards, I put the tip of my exacto knife blade into the center and go in a circle around the hole. You won't get a perfect circle, which is actually better as no two holes are going to be completely the same. You end up with holes like this example, this example and this example.
Using them makes it much easier to control the depth of the holes. It's harder to overdo the hole (make it too big/deep) with this technique because the metal doesn't hold the heat very long. It can also still give you that pushed up melted metal look if you leave the melted plastic on.
