I'm taking a class on linguistic imperialism at a Japanese university right now. If you're legitimately interested in the topic, there's a good book called Resisting Linguistic Imperialism in English Teaching.

Of course, not all English teachers are actively trying to shove Western culture down their students' throats or promote the superiority of their language over others. That's taking the point to Tumblr levels of silliness. But it's also silly to claim that language teaching is a totally apolitical act with no connection to the centuries of Western imperialism that made the world what it is today. There are a lot of reasons why English is being taught all over the world, not all of them pure, not all of them sinister.

I don't think there's any grand conspiracy to promote English education in order to trample other languages, but it's hard to deny that the current status of English benefits the core English speaking countries.
