I had problems in my reservoir every time when I used airstones. I was constantly adding peroxide to fight of slime and crap. Now I use a water pump and point it towards the surface. The water breaks the surface and this aerates the water. Apparently, airstones do the same thing. It isn't the bubbles that aerate, but the surface disturbances. The pump I use is this:

I use Rio 50 pumps for all of my circulation. They're cheap and super reliable. Every once in a while I get one that is a bit noisy, but they seem to break in and get over that.
