The extended editions are the best option, so I understand your torment lol

I know for a fact that they also sell Hobbit Feet slippers, so if you had him be a hobbit, you don't have to have him run around barefoot! Which, y'know, is a Godsend when at a Con. Bare Feet are asking for trouble!

EDIT: I found some listings on Amazon! Cute, Fluffy ones! and Officially Licensed Ones!

Personally, I recommend the fluffy ones from Think Geek. Much better quality by the looks of it. And cute!
