We drive on Delaware State beaches year round and the sand gets very soft. I am frequently tempted to not air down because my '04 is great in the sand, but I always get the full nag from wife and kids, and nobody wants to be that stuck guy. So I drop to 25psi, which makes a noticeable difference in traction, but I can still safely drive on the road to the industrial air pump at a nearby gas station. But honestly in 4x4 you're probably fine. If you start to feel any slippage at all you just stop and let some air out, but don't wait til you're immobile.
