I'm also in the medical field so I know exactly where you're coming from... We bought waterproof fitted sheets. Put a regular sheet on top and you don't notice it at all. This is what I have and I highly recommend it!

(put a regular sheet underneath so when you're done you can just peel off the top layers and pass out on clean sheets)

i've had this bed for about 6 years now, and it has held up pretty well. it is NOT a firm bed at all. for me, it's more comfortable than spring mattresses though. yes, it does keep heat in, but i'm always cold so i need that.
