I actually thought of something else that might help. I am currently using Smartthings motion sensors which connect to my Smartthings hub over Zwave. The motion sensors themselves are battery powered, and I have them mounted using double-sided tape, which means they don't need to be physically connected to anything to work. If you already have a Zwave network, you can just affix a motion sensor like this inside your mailbox and you would probably be able to pick up the signal from within your apartment. The motion sensor also reports temperature, so this would give you an external temperature sensor as well. Now that I'm thinking about it, I will probably try this myself.

Total value is $163. Some things to consider is that the bulbs are dimmable only. They are not color temperature adjustable. The motion sensor is also finicky, from what I've read

Yeah check it out on Amazon. They're listing the 2nd gens with the 1st gen pics. The reviewers on there have pointed it out and they're 100% right. Unfortunately, finding the 1st gens are practically impossible now, so whatever.
