This is only tangentially related to your question, but I'll throw it out there.

I bought a Sansa Clip MP3 player for about 30 bucks. I got the lowest capacity possible, because there's a very heavy trend of diminishing returns as you go up on the storage capacity. The 8 GB one gives you four times the capacity, but is around $20 more. I got a 16GB microSD card for that same price. So now I have an 18 GB MP3 player for the price that they're selling the 8 GB one.

Which then got me thinking about how much more Apple charges for their higher capacity players. It's a ripoff. Keep this in mind.

One of your options would be to just get a few memory cards and a player you like. You may think switching out the cards is a hassle, and maybe it is, but 16GB of music is quite a bit. Just strategically distribute the music so that the stuff you're most likely to listen to is on one card. At 192kbps, that's over a week of music. Unless you have really good headphones, the encoding isn't going to be the bottleneck of quality. Speaking of headphones, if you go with the Sansa, the included earbuds totally suck and should be used only in an emergency. Keep them around, but you'll want to get something better.

I like the Clip because it's simple. It's idiot proof. It just plays music. It's light, it's easy, it's quick. And hey, they'll eventually make an 80GB microSD card, and then you'll be set.

my 160-gig ipod is still going strong, but if i ever needed a new mp3 player I'd probably go for a sansa clip: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Clip-Player-Black/dp/B002MAPSQM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1345493264&sr=8-3&keywords=sansa+clip

from everything I've heard, it's very reliable and quality for the price, and is a better deal than an ipod shuffle. it also has a microSD card slot, which means you can customize it however you want; get a small card and use it like a shuffle/workout mp3 player, or get bigger ones like 32 or 64 gigs, and if you don't mind swapping them out, you could easily use multiple cards to hold as much music as a full-size ipod.

otherwise though, I agree that the ipod is pretty much the platonic ideal of mp3 players at this piont.

I use one of these. They are super tiny, and have a micro SD slot. The battery lasts forever, too.

I do a lot of running while listening to music. May I suggest any IEM's with comply foam tips.

I would not suggest Klipsch's IEMs as they fall out if sweat gets in your ears (though otherwise I love them).

The foam tips will stay in even if sweaty (admittedly kinda gross).

As far as which IEMs, that is up to you. I run with rather expensive headphones (250$). In your price range I'd probably get something by Shure, which should include the foam tips with the headphones.

Also, on a side note, the Sansa Clip+ is awesome for working out and the cheapest version only runs about 30$. If you plan to keep using your iPhone may I suggest a product by Spibelt. I use one when I can't be without my phone.

I could talk for hours about this. Good luck and feel free to ask questions.
