Adding on to this, pretreating your clothes with permethrin really helps as well. I've literally watched them die on my pantleg.
Edit: I've always used this spray

For the straps. Only needs occasional treatments
Permethrin. Works better than deet. Only apply it to your clothes, not your skin!
I don't know if exposing yourself to chemicals is more or less better, but I always spray my outdoor socks and shoes and shirts with permethrin. It dries in about 2 hours, and is good for a couple washes in the washing machine I think.
That with deet on the skin has been pretty impenetrable in deep canada woods, arkansas, and new jersey. I even coat my dogs harnesses in it.
I spend about $15 every 2 years on a bottle. I cover my camping hammock and rain flys in it too. Keeps mosquitos away.

Yup. This stuff was a life saver when walking through Peruvian forests.
Yes, high power DEET but get this stuff for your clothes. AMAZING. I sprayed some on some ants that got in the house and it was like a dropped a hydrogen bomb on them. A mass of 1000ants stopped moving on .5 seconds. Mosquitos and ticks and everything hates it. Bug magic.

Permetherin, dude. http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Permethrin-Clothing-Repellent-12-Ounce/dp/B001ANQVZE Just keep away from cats until dry, otherwise they may die a painful death.
Consider permethrin for treating clothes/supplies. It is poisonous to cats while it's wet but harmless once it dries.

So this is in the files of the group I admin on facebook, another admin wrote it up for us but hopefully it will help you:
Mites are a royal pain in the ass. Here is how I fought them:
The hamsters need a drop on the back of the neck. I pull their scruff up and drop the medication onto what is between my fingers. Given what you guys are looking at, dose then once, then two weeks later, then three weeks later. Pregnant mums can be dosed, and the medication can be passed onto their pups. I wouldn't dose the pups until 4wks.
There’s also the tape trick. Wrap a bit of tape around your finger so the sticky side is facing outwards, then brush your hamster with it. Just be careful the tape is not too sticky (run it over your clothes to reduce stickiness if needed). Mites will usually come up as black specks.
As far as food storage.
The bugs were certainly there.
Permethrin for clothes and gear. I use anything with deet for the skin.
