The Mophie Space Pack may have built in storage at a pretty impressive cost, but it also has significant limitations. Everything has to be accessed through the Mophie App, and this is what a CNET reviewer found about that:

"The Space App automatically organizes files into Photos, Videos, Music, Documents, and "Other files." So, this device essentially works the same way as most other external storage solutions for iOS. Content has to be accessed through an storage vendor app, and content can only be transferred between apps that support some type of capacity to do so. This really is due to the security features of iOS that require apps and their data to be sandboxed. This makes iOS devices very safe, but cause limitations.

In spite of these limitations, there are actually already a lot of external storage options these days for iDevices, some examples:

During my internship at Seagate they gave all the interns a 1TB GoFlex WiFi drive. I've used it on 5 or 6 road trips and have had nothing but good experiences with it. My wife and kid stream movies to their tablets and I stream music from the drive.

It has a battery that lasts decently long. I think I got 5 hours of continuous use out of it. However, while in the car I just leave it plugged in to a charger.

Couple different options to choose from there, you have to pick which works best for you. I'd say have it broadcast from the server out to the hard drives and schedule a task to push every 5 minutes but that could result in lost data, or corrupted data.

The hard drive broadcasts wireless so your computer can connect to it, and then the hard drives connects to your wifi and via the hard drive you get internet. so your laptop would be constantly connected to the hard drive. and when you get in range the hard drive would connect.

next question, what kind of wireless infrastructure is in place? are you expecting drivers to get out and take hard drives inside? Or do you have wireless AP's outside?


Cloud drive is your best bet, but I'm no stranger to paranoid clients, hence my readiness to give you somewhat unconventional solutions.

How do you plan on implementing this? Do you have an IT Department? You say you have an FTP server, what kind of server?

I definitely like the idea of that.

You can get a WiFi hard drive (this, for example) which has an iOS app which you can use to move files to/from your phone. Basically, the hard drive creates a hotspot, you connect the phone, and you share your photos/videos to an app.

Alternatively, you can get iPhone-compatible flash drives (like this, for example).

There's similar stuff available for Android... actually, there's a lot more hardware and its a bit less convoluted to use because of Android's exposed filesystem and support for USB mass storage devices.

A lot more storage, has its own battery rated to last for ~10 hrs (doesn't consume the N9's battery), and you don't have to worry about future devices having OTG support or not when trying to use it. (it works with anything that is wifi capable).

I would highly recommend this sling case, which fits the Surface Pro with Type Cover perfectly. It was made with other 10" tablets in mind (most of which are not 16:9 widescreen; iPad for example), but the inner pocket has a velcro strap which lets you secure the Surface so that it won't wiggle around at all. It's very thin and minimal, but it has padding and pockets in the right places to maximize what you can carry. Pockets are big enough to store the charger, pens/styluses, a mouse, at least one portable hard drive (I've also been looking into Seagate's Wireless Plus hard drive for a cool wireless solution that I wouldn't have to remove from the bag to use), and I also have a small sketchbook in mine sometimes.

I like it because I think the backpack format is not only more stable than all the dangling 12" messenger bags, but it also looks way less like a manpurse.
