Anything with the rubber inserts works well in my experience, and is a whole lot more comfortable than flat plastic buds.

My Sennheiser MM30i's crapped out on me after about two years of use and abuse - being tangled up in my pockets, being put on full blast for hours each day. They're the best sounding/most crisp earbuds I've ever owned, lasted longer than any other cheap pair (most of the Sony, V-Moda and Skullcandy shit I used to get would only go a couple months at the most), and would have lasted much longer if I had really babied them (one side crapped out, most likely some sort of loose wiring somewhere). Work great for classical and any other type of music. They've gone up in price a bit - I only paid $35 for them IIRC. I don't know if they make a comparable model without the microphone for cheaper, it might be worth checking out the rest of their lineup.

I don't know if there are any earbuds like this, but I'd also say make sure to avoid headphones with active noise cancelling systems - they generally compromise the quality of the music, IMO. The padded buds should provide enough muting for a subway (I listen to music in trains/buses/cars/busy city streets etc with no problem whatsoever).

Buying the Apple earbuds is basically straight up saying "I want everything to sound like ass". Apple's earbuds are AWFUL.

If you actually care about quality as opposed to having "Apple" stamped on it, I suggest these or these or my personal favorite, these.

In my experience the Sennheiser MM30i/g have been very durable, mine are 3 or 4 years old no fraying or visible damage. I have lost count how many times I have got them caught or dropped my phone and they rip out of my ears. I can't speak for the sound quality as I only listen to podcasts but to me they sound better and are more comfortable than the Soundmagic E10's I have.

I've had these for about 4 months. They come with kinda the same remote as the apple earbuds (and a microphone) and the sound quality is pretty amazing for the price imo. I had a pair of headphones from this brand before, lasted for 3 years!

I've got a pair Sennheisers that I've had a few years now and theyms ace.

Not too expensive, good sound quality.

The thing with headphones is you pretty much get what you pay for (until you get to the beats level of pricing)

Just to be sure it's the headphones and not the iphone, try them in another device. If it's definitely the headphones then your only recourse is to buy new ones. This leads into my question for you.

You bought apple earbuds after the first pair broke? Why?

Seriously, they've always sucked pretty bad. Even the new ones after the redesign are only slightly less uncomfortable with marginally better sound.

Don't look at this as a problem, look at it as an opportunity. Get a pair of these or similar.

Does it count if I updated my list just pre-Christmas? Hand't done it in like a year before that... and seemed a good time to do it! I'll add other things now just in case!

So I added the Sign Language teach yourself because it's one of those things I've always wanted to learn for some reason (though I have no idea who i'd practise on), and the headphones because I and to go though them pretty quickly and I love my music. I make up little stories to go with whatever song I'm listening to. I'll write them into real stories eventually. The clothes I added because I've recently lost weight and have no clothes my size anymore and I love superdry.

I took out the face creams I added because of random skincare addiction reddit threads. I can't afford them and really moisturiser is all I actually use. I'm so bad at that sort of thing. Took out some of the more obscure boardgames I'd added because we barely play the ones we have (wish I could encourage my so to play more!). Took out the health stuff (creatine) because i've just bought some from a different site. Also took off the sugar free chocolate because I found some much much nicer in an actual real life store for a surprisingly reasonable price!

Incase those don't count I also added this blender because my bf killed the one we'd had for just a week by putting it onto a hot ring of the stove... it melted and wouldn't hook back up the the base. This happened 2 months ago... I miss my cauliflower mash :(

(I came first in jiggery pokery, what about you?)

Budget - $50 or less

Source - iPhone and desktop computer

Requirements for Isolation - Not needed at all, I used a $15 pair of Panasonic earbuds and I was completely satisfied

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - Yes, I will take them everywhere I go, mainly for daily high school routine

Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM (same thing as earbuds right?)

Preferred tonal balance - I don't know anything about audio, so I guess just an overall balanced pair

Past headphones - I used the Panasonic Ergofit In-Ear Earbuds before. I liked that they fit well into my small ears, how light they were, and the low price. However, they broke very quickly after only a few months of use (that was my second pair).

Additional Notes - I've been considering Sennheiser earbuds because apparently, the brand seems to be pretty good in general (might be wrong tho)? I found four Sennheiser earbuds that seem to match what I'm looking for: 1 has the most reviews and seems like a safe bet. 2 also seems like a safe bet, there are not many reviews but everyone rated them pretty good. 3 is somewhat more expensive than the other ones and there are not many reviews, I personally feel like the other three options will be better considering the higher price tag. 4 is the cheapest right now since they are on sale while the other ones are not, but many of the reviews say that these are not durable at all. I'm mainly leaning towards either option 1 or 2. If there are other good earbuds (non-Sennheiser), I would appreciate suggestions! I don't know much about audio after all...
