M40x definitely seems up my alley. Unfortunately I dislike the fact that it seems most people claim they have zero soundstage. After doing some more research I came across Senn Momentum. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Momentum-On-Ear-Headphone/dp/B00DKPXVEY

Would those be a good balance between portability and having a good soundstage?

I posted a few days ago looking for a pair of IEMs and /u/PocketSpoon suggested the RHA S500Is. I bought them from the Apple Store that day and while they sound fantastic, it turns out I don't really like IEMs. I tried several different sizes for the ears, but they were not very comfortable for me and gave me a slight headache. Not a great way to start my day on the train before work. So now I'm looking for something new...

Budget - ~$100, but flexible

Source - iPhone 6S or iPod Classic

Requirements for Isolation - Some would be nice, will be using these mainly for public transportation.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Welcome to suggestions, as long as they have volume and playback control. I'm mainly looking for something on the smaller side.

Preferred tonal balance - Balanced

Past headphones - These will be replacing Apple EarPods and Sennheiser PX 100s. I enjoy the Sennheisers so maybe something similar to those with controls would be perfect.

Preferred Music - Mainly punk/indie/hip-hop, here are some of my favorite artists to aid in a recommendation: LCD Soundsystem, The Descendents, The Replacements, Sleater-Kinney, Weezer, Kanye West, The Hold Steady, Kid Dynamite, Japandroids

I really want a pair of headphones that have the volume, play/pause, skip controls like Apple headphones do.

A friend suggested these Sennheisers, they look nice, but may be a bit larger than I want. Any opinions on them?

How much of a step up is the Sennheiser HD 558 from Sennheiser Momentum (V1 on ear)?

I currently use the Momentums as my gaming headset, with a Vmoda Boom pro mic. I plan on doing the same with the 558s, while moving my momentums to my portable headphones. Just wondering how much of an improvement the HD558s sound. Most reviews aren't too explicit in the differences (besides the physical shape / comfort). I'm also buying a cheap DAC for the 558s as well which wouldn't help the momentums too much due to low impedance.

Thanks!
