Many cats develop behavioral problems, especially litter box issues, when exposed to stressful situations. Obviously the cats' owners need to step up and take responsibly for their pets. That being said, here are some things you can suggest:

Edit #2: Just saw your username, and would now like to repeat my recommendation to buy a mattress protector.

$349.99 + free shipping with prime. Had mine since April 14, 2014
Downsides :
takes like 2 days to decompress once you get it - and i see you're in a time pinch.
You absolutely should buy a protector at the same time, and those are hard to get right ... some of my ... 'sleepovers' complain this protector is too hot - probably because it is waterproof - which might be a good add for op. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035E63WM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
upsides:
pretty much everything else, comfort, price, quality, durability. Spring mattresses are good when new new (1-2 yrs) especially for husky (250lbs) young men who like to ..... jump ... on the bed, this thing is just as good since the first day my evil bitch ex girlfriend unboxed it while I was still at school. The video on the unboxing looked pretty awesome..... but i will never know if it was actually that awesome.
Oh noes, I caved and bought a really nice one for like 30 or 40 bucks for my queen sized bed.
Here is what I have
I'm surprised more cat owners haven't mentioned using one of these waterproof mattress covers. http://www.amazon.com/Malouf-Hypoallergenic-Waterproof-Mattress-Protector-/dp/B0035E63WM/
It's a thin as a sheet and completely silent (no plastic-y sound or feel). I picked this up when the cat was having bladder crystal irritation and peeing in our bed (supposedly, they do that when they're stressed and looking for a safe place to pee).
We don't have that problem now with proper supplements, but the cover is still there for just in case there's a flare up or some sort of rare vengeance piss.
I have gone through a ton pf waterproof covers and the cheap ones never last very long. If you have the funds I would get a wool one but those cost hundreds of dollars. I have tried the terry cloth waterproof ones from Malouf and it barely lasted 2 years before it started leaking. I wash my mattress covers about once a month and sheets weekly.
Also these aren't just cotton there is a hidden waterproof layer. The quilting is really comfortable too.
