First things first, OP:

DO NOT BUY GAMER HEADSETS

They are cheap for a reason and are horrible headphones.

If you want quality that will last you a long time look into HiFi headphones. They're $100 for headphones for the lowest price I've seen, and $20 for earbuds that I've seen (and owned).

They are compatible with anything that has a 3.5mm jack, and most have in line microphones that will sound better that any other gaming headset you can purchase.

Go to /r/Audiophile, /r/headphones, and /r/headphoneporn for ideas on what to buy.

I've had the same headphones for nearly 2 years, longer than any earbuds or headphones I've ever purchased, they came with a microphone, and sound just as good, if not better than my speakers.

These are what I have, but have significantly jumped in price (were half that price) and these are a good replacement for them. They don't come with a microphone, but are still great for sound whoring.

Edit: I saw the budget and the Audio Technicas are ~40 pounds over budget. If you keep digging in those subs I recommended, you'll find a great deal on some headphones. I found $20 earbuds that sound absolutely amazing for the price. They take a really long time to ship from Japan (to the US at least), but if you want to try them, I'll drop a link.

I know the recommendations you're going to get will seem tempting OP, but trust me, they will break in a week, not sound good, or the microphone will shit on you, I guarantee it. I've had 3 pairs of gaming headsets over the years and they all broke after the first year and a half of having them. I've paid over $80 for each pair too.

I hear you, it's definitely getting harder and harder. What's your budget and requirements like tho? There's definitely a plethora of good choices to pick from.

My pick for budget earphones is the XiaoMi Piston 2, which i picked up for less than 15 dollars.

For a proper headphone, I've used the Logitech UE 6000 for a long time and they are really lovely to listen to. Unfortunately, durability is poor and the leather/PU style cups usually disintegrate after a while. And it's discontinued unfortunately.

My current wishlist includes the Sony MDR 1A, which sounds absolutely fantastic with the on board DAC. A must-get if you have the budget for it.

And on the wireless side of things, the Bose QC35 is great for mobility, without sacrificing quality like most wireless headsets do. This one is expensive, but for good reason of course since the unit I tried blocked off external noise extremely well to create an immersive listening experience.

Hope this helps you in some ways at least!

If the color appeals to you, there is small supply of fully refurbished B&O H6 gen.2 available in the 'natural' color scheme. $130 is as low a price as I've seen for what is an exceptionally good portable closed-back. These refurbs are legit; I received a pair of them myself and they are the genuine article in new condition.

There is still some available new stock in standard black and some of the other colors of the gen.1, but the prices have been steadily rising. The H6 line has been officially discontinued and I suspect that's why. Ebay is an alternative option.

The Sony MDR1A is another good option. But again, the prices have risen on them quite a bit over the past 6 months or so.

curious, how do you like the kz zs5? Mine are coming soon.

And maybe the Sony MDR1A

Budget - ~300, Flexible

Source - Galaxy S6, Desktop PC, or Mpow Bluetooth v4.1 Receiver

Requirements for Isolation - More Isolation. I plan to use these in my office and in public

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear/ full sized

Preferred tonal balance - I prefer a more natural balance, maybe some emphasized bass and mids, but nothing crazy. Just some cans that are a pure joy to listen to.

Past headphones - Sennheiser earbuds (old, and not sure which model), Sony Gold Playstation headset

Preferred Music - A pretty wide range, mostly acoustic and alternative (Lewis Watson, Cody Fry, John Mayer). Classic rock (Queen) and more modern rock (Thirty Seconds to Mars, Pierce the Veil). Piano centered classical (Ludovico Einaudi). A bit of EDM/ Pop/ House music (DJ Snake, Kygo, Lauv). Some hip-hop/ rap (Run the Jewels)

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - For my next set I'm really looking for a pair of closed backs that are a joy to listen to for hours, with the best sound stage and positioning (I'd like to use these for gaming as well). I know that's difficult for closed backs obviously, but I have come up with some potential choices:

u/MAsfandYar · 1 pointr/AVexchange

Oppo PM-3s are a great set of headphones here are the few reasons why:

  • Closed-back and over ear headphones (Since you have mentioned that in your post, it's a no-brainer)
  • Have Planar-Magnetic Audio driver. These drivers are usually present in very expensive headphones ($1000+ ).
  • Comes with 4 different cables for different devices.
  • Extremely natural sound

In fact, these cans have been declared as best over ear headphones in different review roundups
That being said, if you don't have enough budget, then look out for something like Sony MDR-1A: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR1A-Premium-Hi-Res-Headphones/dp/B00NBMHY58

I can't recommend the Sony MDR1A enough for someone that wants portable, bassy headphones.

Here's a great review. You would have to stretch the budget a bit, but it's definitely worth it.

Budget: I'd like to avoid going over $300 if possible.

Source: Primarily PS4 games (possibly using mixAmp 2013), but also for PC gaming, and listening to music on my MacBook and iPhone. Most of my collection is normal quality / bitrate stuff, so no need for super high res / high end stuff that only benefits super high quality music file-types (unless games have some weird loss-less audio files I'm not aware of)

No isolation reqs. though I'm okay with closed or open.

I'm going to assume full-sized is the way to go here in terms of quality to $$$, but whatever you guys recommend

I think I'd like an overall neutral total balance.

I currently have a set of 2013 Astro a40s with mixamp for gaming and Klipsch s4i II for non gaming stuff (music, movies). Ideally my new headphones would be good for both of these, with primary focus on gaming stuff (possibly through the mixamp).

Preferred Music: video game music naturally! So basically a little bit of everything, but I guess a good mix of classical and electronic for the most part.

Improve? Definitely a new pair of headphones (would be my first non-IEM outside of Astro a40s) but I'd also like confirmation that the amp I'm using (an Astro a40 2013 mixamp) is sufficient or a recommendation on an alternative.

More info:

I'm in the market for a set of headphones for my PS4. Audio quality for video games is the primary concern, so I'm willing to spend a decent amount as long as it's worth it. Having the headphones also handle other media well (music, movies, TV shows) is a big plus too. Wired headsets are totally fine but I'll consider wireless if it's really worth it.

I currently own Astro a40s (2013 edition), but they've been well used and I'm hoping to make an upgrade. At this point I'm strongly considering keeping my a40 mixamp and just buying some quality headphones. Note that I'm totally okay with getting separate inline / external mic so I'd strongly prefer just a normal set of headphones without a permanent mic so that I can use them in non-gaming settings.

One thing I'm not sure about is whether to continue using my current a40 2013 amp, buy a newer a40 TR amp, or using something else entirely to connect to the PS4.

The "real" headphones I'm currently looking at are: Sony MDR1A but after reading this sub for a while I haven't seen it recommended often so you probably have other suggestions.

Outside of using it on PS4, having them be reasonably portable so that I can use them with my phone and laptop would be a nice bonus, but primary use is in my room all by myself, so sound quality for games, then music is definitely the priority.

One last thing: I'm not a competitive gamer looking for something focused around multiplayer matches or streaming or audio filters that sound like garbage so that I can hear footsteps better or something dumb like that. I occasionally play online and use voice chat and whatnot, but 98% of the time I'm simply looking for an immersive single player experience. I'd like something that sounds good and properly reproduces what the sound designer had in mind when making the game. I used to play with an amazing 7.1 THX certified home theater system when I was living at home, but now that I'm in college I need a pair of headphones instead, but I still want an immersive high quality experience.

Anyway, thanks for the advice!

there are a BUNCH of options, but real quick from amazon I can tell you all of these will be phenomenal. their sound signatures will vary, but the build quality and sound will be excellent. none of them use the technical trickery that Bose is known for:

Sony is known for good gear, and the mdr 7520 are no exception. You'll even save a bit of money after shipping.

Klipsch too makes great gear, and these studio headphones will save you a hundred bucks and sound much cleaner than the Bose ones no noise cancellation though.

another killer pair of Sonys, these are ultra high resolution (up to an unnecessary 100khz response). between these and the 7520s will be a choice of sound signature

speaking of insanely accurate, these are probably the cheapest planar headphones on the market and reviews are really good of them.

All those are available in the 300-350 price range and much more technically advanced than Bose when it comes to sound. NONE have noise cancellation, because like I said, Bose is still the best at that.

I'll go from cheapest to most expensive here:

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7GM - $199

AKG K702 - $232 (I have the older version of these, the K701s, and they've been going strong for ~8 years. Can't recommend them enough.)

HIFIMAN HE-400I - $249

Sony MDR1A - $298

Monoprice Monolith M1060 - $299

Sennheiser HD 650 - $315.99

AKG K712 - $379

Most of these headphones will really shine with a little headphone amp to give them a bit more power than your computer or phone's audio output can deliver. Something like a FiiO E10k works amazing. Or the FiiO A3 for a portable solution. Or if you want something that looks a bit sexier and is more of a stay on your desk kind of thing, you can go for something like this or this. Either way, any of these headphones will blow your Bose cans away no question - like not even in the same league of sound quality.

/r/Headphones will be instrumental to your search.

That being said, I would recommend any of the following:

u/Pzrs · 1 pointr/headphones

is there a difference between the international version of the MDR-1A you linked and this version?

besides the price, of course.
