Black material absorbs light. This is bad. :)

These are the beasties that Sony released way back when - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-VPS-80DS-DynaClear-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B000RYS8YY - the goal was to have blacker blacks - projectors suck for contrast.
