I've found that a nice dose of L-Theanine (200 mg) has a nice effect on the caffeine. In short, it prevents the jitteryness and anxiety that goes with caffeine intake (for me), and also prevents a caffeine "high" and "low." It allows me to think more clearly and without anxiety when drinking caffeine. It is naturally present in green tea, is good for you, and has no side effects that I've noticed. I am not a doctor. You can get modafinil and the like without a prescription if you order it off the grey market. I'm not familiar with getting it into NZ though.

But yeah, the nutritional supplements are generally non-prescription. Choline supplements, piracetam, l-theanine and the like should be freely available. I've linked to ones that I personally use and would vouch for, though lots of others here get stuff from from various merchants and report high quality.

I know some people don't like to rely on medicine/pills, but I used L-Theanine pills whenever I feel anxiety coming on.

L-Theanine works great for me. It's a supplement that comes from green tea and has virtually no side effects. I researched the hell out of it and couldn't find any. Apparently in Japan they put it in food, drinks, snacks, so it should be really safe.

I now take it everyday on an empty stomach. I feel noticeable yet subtle relaxation effects within 30 minutes which last for about 8-10 hours. I still get anxiety but it feels...blunted, and that has allowed me to deal with things a lot better.
