It's usually caused by bacteria and yeast, which also cause tear staining on smaller dogs. You can use various tear staining products to mitigate the issue. Eye Envy works fairly well. Also, you can use a shampoo like this one.

These may take some time to work, but they'll improve the appearance over time :)

angel eyes made my bichon and maltese very sick after a few weeks of use, but the pet store i used to work at sold the hell out of it. tear stains are a result of a ph imbalance, so chalk and peroxide will likely remove the stains, but won't cure the cause of them. be careful with grain free foods, bichons are prone to stones (i just finished paying off my dog's second cystotomy for a stone blockage) and the last thing you want is a grain free diet if your dog is at all predisposed to developing any sort of build up. our vet recommended boiled chicken and rice mixed in with a high quality food. it's worked well for keeping tyson's stains at bay. i've even noticed my maltese' eyes clearing up. as far as cleaning them, i use tropiclean Spa face wash, blueberry something or other. it smells great and it's tear free. good luck! http://www.amazon.com/Tropiclean-SPA-Pet-Facial-Scrub/dp/B001AWH582
