Highly recomend not purchasing a blade as a self defense tool. The major issue with a knife is death or incapacitation is caused by blood loss. So you could in theory stab/slash an attacker multiple times and they will still be capable of doing you harm cause it takes time to bleed out. Also another issue is retention. In a fight with a stronger person, it will be difficult to keep them from taking your knife and using it against you.
Quarantine's suggestion of self defense classes and pepper spray are a great recommendation. Also being vigilant and not being in stupid places at stupid times will do much more to keep you safe than a knife would. I personally would say to take a conceal carry course and purchase a firearm. However, that is very difficult in CA.
If you are dead set on purchasing a knife, like other users have mentioned. You would want a fixed blade. however, that probably wouldnt be legal unless you want to have it strapped to your hip. CRKT isn't a bad brand but I wouldn't bet my life on a CRKT. I would personally buy this knife

If you go the knife route it would be worth taking martial arts classes as well. I believe the knife laws would allow you to carry the blade I linked. You should always double check though. Knifeup.com is a great source on knife legality.
If it's legal where you are, kubatons work well and so do tactical pens.
I personally carry both a kubaton and a Matriarch emerson open (opens up automatically when you take it out of your pocket).
I only cary the knife because I'm comfortable with them. I haven't had to use it yet, thankfully.
Lock-backs can be made to be less stiff. Also look into the Endura 4 Wave... It and the Matriarch 2 Wave are part of my EDC

It's definitely serrated. Easy one hand opening/closing. Plus cool factor. Even if the tip breaks, there's a lot of room to keep using. However, not for everyone. (Not affiliated)
