  2. An informative and reliable book (for example, the C++ Bible)

It's not cool, it won't draw "ooo, ahhh" comments from your co-workers, but it will tell you 90% of what you need to know. Supplement it with "Essential C++" and "Essential STL" from Myers and you'll be fine.

Personally I do not get on with Stroustrup, I feel it obscures as much as it explains.
