If you're looking for a quick crash-cart type ... I used to use https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Console-Portable-Adapter-Transfer/dp/B00IZGR6IK/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1525789607&sr=8-12&keywords=kvm+startech+usb that .. however the recent updates havn't caught up with OSX and it fails.. Still solid on Linux however.

You can use a regular laptop and one of these:

I like this as well.

Crash Cart adapter is a must have for me in my laptop bag.

Also a Gearmo USB-Serial adapter. I used to insist on an onboard serial port, but these days you are better off getting a smaller, lighter laptop IMO. This serial adapter works fantastically on windows 10 64 and has lights to show you which pins are in use. I highly recommend it:

Also I always carry a Null modem serial cable, a cisco console cable, a fluke toner, a spare 15 ft patch cable, a wireless mouse, and perhaps most importantly, a screw driver.

If you can swing it, at least one or two of these:

bit pricey but I've got one and it's AWESOME for a datacenter with any sort of physical boxes and lack of space/equipment.

Kind of. There is a USB KVM device that will work, and it lists Windows/Mac/linux compatibility. However, it is a little overkill for home use.

I have one for my datacenter and carry it when I travel, it is great for headless devices with standard ports.

so far as KVMs are concerned, I swear by this type. https://www.amazon.com/Console-Portable-Laptop-Crash-Adapter/dp/B00IZGR6IK?th=1 that, and 1 VGA female to VGA male plug on the end so you don't accidentally bend pins from the wear and tear of plugging it in to literal thousands of vga ports. For me, it is worth its weight in gold (if it weighed 2 more pounds). :- )
